Pioneer Educator and Legislator an Early Settler.
Captain J. L. Greer who died on last Friday had a notable career. Besides being founder of the town of Anna he was a pioneer educator and member of the legislature from this county. He was the header of prohibition forces when the saloon was banished from the county.

Sketch of Career.
The following sketch of the life of Captain J. L. Greer appeared in the Daily Courier-Gazette and Weekly Democrat-Gazette April 30, 1914. It is reproduced as a tribute to life and service of this veteran citizen who has now passed on.
The article begins with the following toast to Capt. Greer, the retiring president, at a banquet given in honor of the McKinney School Board by Miss Maxwell and the Domestic Science girls of the Ninth grade. The toast was given by Mrs. H. A. Finch, the lade member of the City Board:
“I deem it both an honor and pleasure to have been assigned the pleasant task of toasting our much esteemed retiring President. I shall begin by assuring you that I am not going to tell all of the good things I know of Capt. Greer, for it I did, it would require much more time than is allotted me upon this occasion.
“His valiant services as a soldier, his ideal citizenship, and his services in many other useful lines, I leave for another to tell – it shall be my pleasure to speak of him as a member of the McKinney School Board.
“For sixteen years he has given his untiring efforts to advancement, and upbuilding of the McKinney Public Schools....
